چکیده

We have modelled the evolution of the number of Lyα absorbers with redshift, resulting from the evolution of the ionising background and the Hubble expansion. The contribution of quasars (QSOs) and galaxies to the H i-ionising UV background has been estimated. The QSOs emissivity is derived from recent fits of their luminosity function. The galaxy emissivity is computed using a stellar population synthesis model, with a starformation history scaled on observations of faint galaxies at λ ≥ 1500Å. We allow for three values of the fraction of ionising photons that can escape the interstellar medium, fesc = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.4. The Intergalactic Medium is modelled as made of purely-absorbing clouds with the distribution in redshift and column density obtained from QSOs absorption lines. For the adopted values of fesc, the contribution of galaxies to the ionising UV background is comparable or greater than that of QSOs. Accounting for the contribution of clouds to the UV emission, all models with fesc <∼ 0.1 provide an ionising flux compatible with local and high-z determination, including those with a pure QSOs background. The observed z ∼ 1 break in the evolution can be better explained by a dominant contribution from galaxies. We find that models in Λ-cosmology with Ωm=0.3, ΩΛ=0.7 describe the flat absorbers evolution for z <∼ 1.0 better than models for Ωm=1.0.

The Direct Detection of Lyman-continuum Emission from Star-forming Galaxies

We present the results of rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of a sample of 14 z ∼ 3 star-forming galaxies in the SSA22a field. These spectra are characterized by unprecedented depth in the Lyman-continuum region. For the first time, we have detected escaping ionizing radiation from individual galaxies at high redshift, with two of the 14 objects showing significant emission belo...

The Hubble Deep Field in the Far Ultraviolet

Results from a recent HST survey of field galaxies at wavelengths 1600 Å and 2400 Å are be presented. The data are used to constrain the fraction of Lyman-continuum radiation that escapes from galaxies at redshifts z ≈ 1. The combined UV-IR photometry for HDF galaxies is also used to investigate whether low-mass starburst galaxies dominate the field-galaxy population at redshift z ≈ 1. The rela...

The redshift evolution of Lyman-α absorbers

We present a model for the Lyman-α absorbers that treats all objects (from the low-density forest clouds to the dense damped systems) in a unified description. This approach is consistent with an earlier model of galaxies (luminosity function, metallicity) but also with the known description of the density field in the small-scale non-linear regime. We consider two cosmological models: a critic...

Constraints on the metagalactic hydrogen ionization rate from the Lyman-α forest opacity

Understanding the sources responsible for reionizing the Universe is a key goal of observational cosmology. A discrepancy has existed between the metagalactic hydrogen ionization rate, ΓHI, predicted by early hydrodynamical simulations of the Lyman-α forest if scaled to appropriate assumptions for the IGM temperature, when compared to values predicted from the proximity effect. We present new e...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
